What research use only means, why suppliers ask purchasers to acknowledge it, and where the regulatory line sits.
Two different questions
“Are peptides legal” collapses two separate questions that have different answers: whether a substance may be supplied as a laboratory reagent, and whether it may be supplied for a person to use. They are governed differently and the answer to one says nothing about the other.
This page describes the first. It is a description of how supply is arranged and where the line sits, not legal advice, and anyone who needs a determination for their own circumstances should get one.
Who regulates what
Goods supplied for human use in Australia fall under the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989, administered by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. Goods intended for human use generally have to be entered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods before they can be supplied, and many peptides are not on it.
Separately, the Poisons Standard schedules substances by the level of control they require. A substance in Schedule 4 is prescription only, which means it may be supplied for human use on a prescription and not otherwise. A great many of the compounds discussed under the general heading of peptides sit there.
What research use only means
A reagent supplied for laboratory research is supplied on the basis that it will not be used in or on a person or an animal. That is the whole of the condition, and it is the condition that puts the supply outside the arrangements described above rather than a formality attached to the end of them.
It is why the acknowledgement on entering this site asks what it asks, why the same condition appears in the research use policy accepted at checkout, and why every unit carries the statement in print. A purchaser who does not accept the condition is not a purchaser we can supply.
What this site does and does not say
Nothing here describes what a compound does in a person, because a reagent supplier describing that would be describing a use it does not supply for. The catalogue carries names, sizes, prices and documentation, and the reference section explains testing and supply. That is deliberate and it is enforced in the build rather than left to judgement.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration publishes its own guidance on the supply and advertising of unapproved goods, and it is the authority on that subject rather than us.
Personal importation
Australia operates a personal importation scheme for certain goods brought in for an individual, with conditions attached. It is a separate arrangement from the supply described on this site and is not the basis on which anything here is sold.
Purchasers sometimes assume the two are interchangeable. They are not, and the conditions of one do not carry across to the other.
